Phishing attempts\u00a0have skyrocketed<\/a>: In late April,\u00a0Google’s Threat Analysis Group<\/a>\u00a0detected 18 million malware and phishing Gmail messages per day related to COVID-19.<\/p>\n

Those phishing campaigns are also a common way to distribute ransomware, a type of malware that encrypts the victim’s files and demands payment in exchange for the decryption key, the\u00a0CISA explains<\/a>. This nasty IT security threat is now running rampant: Ransomware-related incidents were involved in 41 percent of reported cyber insurance claims in the first half of this year, according to a\u00a0report from Coalition<\/a>. On top of that, the average ransom payment rose to $111,605 in the first\u00a0quarter of 2020, an 11 percent increase from the fourth\u00a0quarter of 2019,\u00a0Coveware has reported<\/a>.
