How to face your technology fears

Picture of a desk with a laptop and black mug. On the white brick wall above the desks, there's a garland of ghosts, and there's a ghost figurine on the desk holding the word "Boo."With Halloween upon us, it’s the perfect time of year to work on facing your fears. What makes you break out in a cold sweat and gets your heart racing? While you might not actually be horrified by IT, you’re not alone if some aspects of the tech side of your business stress you out. For instance, 66 percent of cybersecurity professionals reported a heightened level of concern about cyberattacks this year, according to the 2022 SonicWall Threat Mindset Survey.

CIOs and other executives face plenty of pressure as they strive to keep up with the rapidly changing IT solution landscape. Earlier this year, CIO reported on the biggest issues information technology leaders face, including but not limited to the following:

If you’re currently worried about tackling any or all of these challenges, you can take steps to assuage your anxiety. For anyone grappling with technology-related fears (e.g., what if my business fails at digital transformation?), these strategies should help.

1. Learn all you can.

Sir Francis Bacon once wrote that “knowledge itself is power.” If something worries or scares you, researching it can put your mind at ease (at least somewhat) and give you a greater sense of control over the situation. For instance, if you’re concerned about your cloud strategy, spend an hour or so per week digging into the available reports and articles on how to succeed in that area.

2. Make a plan.

Yogi Berra famously said, “If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll end up somewhere else.” To maintain a competitive edge and leverage IT in the best way for your business, you’ll want to create a roadmap based on your needs, goals, and expected growth. The map should include timelines for maintaining and upgrading your current IT solutions as well as deploying new ones.

3. Reach out to the experts.

In a national address to America’s schoolchildren in 2009, then-President Barack Obama said, “Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. I do that every day. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of strength because it shows you have the courage to admit when you don’t know something, and that then allows you to learn something new.”

In that vein, if you’re afraid that you’re falling behind in the realm of IT, don’t hesitate to reach out to trusted technology advisors and IT consultants for guidance. It’s incredibly difficult to stay up to date on new and emerging technologies, given how fast the landscape changes.
