Microsoft Office 365 News 02-18-2020: Updates to Outlook on the Web, Forms-Based Authentication and More

microsoft office 365 logo.The latest Microsoft Office 365 news includes a new Tasks experience for Outlook on the Web users becoming generally available, alterations to forms-based authentication for Office apps, and other updates and new features.

New Features

    • New Outlook on the Web Tasks experience
      • What’s happening: Microsoft previously announced the general availability of the new Outlook on the Web. To further improve the user experience, the new Tasks powered by To Do is now generally available as well. Microsoft also plans to retire the classic Tasks opt-in toggle.

 

    • Interactive Yammer notifications in Outlook on the Web
      • What’s happening: Yammer email notifications in Outlook on the Web will soon be completely interactive Yammer threads.
      • Rollout date: Early March 2020

 

    • New layout for encrypted emails
      • What’s happening: Microsoft previously paused planned updates to Office 365 Message Encryption (OME). However, an updated email layout for encrypted messages has already been rolled out to all tenants.

 

    • Microsoft 365 app management and deployment from single location
      • What’s happening: Global Admins will soon have access to a new feature that allows them to discover, purchase, acquire and deploy 365 Apps created by Microsoft partners from one spot. Up until the launch of this feature, admins had to go to three separate portals to deploy Web apps, Office add-ins and Teams app.

 

    • Delegate permissions for Outlook mobile
      • What’s happening: Delegates with full access permissions will soon have the ability to send emails and reply to calendar invitations on behalf of another user via Outlook for iOS and Android.
      • Rollout start: Mid-February 2020
      • Rollout finish: Mid-April 2020

 

    • New Dynamics 365 Team Member apps
      • What’s happening: Microsoft previously announced the publication of the 2020 release wave 1 plans for Dynamics 365, which compiles new capabilities that will be implemented between April and September 2020. As part of that release, to help customers with use right compliance and tailored role-based experiences, the supplier has introduced new Team Member apps.

    • Teams users gain access to Enhanced Power BI experience
      • What’s happening: Microsoft Teams users will soon have access to an Enhanced Power BI tab.
      • Rollout start: Mid-February 2020
      • Rollout finish: End of February 2020

 

    • Changes to form-based authentication for Office apps
      • What’s happening: Microsoft is updating the handling of forms-based authentication in Office apps in order to enhance security. Forms-based authentication is a legacy method for resources not safeguarded by Microsoft account (MSA) or Azure Active Directory (AAD).
      • Rollout start: Mid-February 2020 for Office ProPlus Monthly Insiders channel members
      • Rollout finish: End of February 2020

 

    • Ability to edit posted Teams messages
      • What’s happening: End users will soon gain the ability to edit a Teams message’s content and channel distribution after it’s posted. Note: This won’t apply to mobile.
      • Rollout start: End of February 2020
      • Rollout finish: Mid-March 2020

    • Known issue with ESN’s and Bulk Spam
      • What’s happening: Microsoft is aware of an issue in which ESN’s failed to include Bulk Spam Messages.

 

    • Power BI notification
      • What’s happening: Office 365 E5 licensed users who have the option to use Power BI but haven’t in the past six months might notice a notification in the gray or yellow message bar in Excel suggesting that they use Power BI for greater productivity.
